According to a recent report there has been a significant drop in the range of mortgages deals that are available, with the number of deals on offer from mortgage providers falling by two thirds. The global credit crunch has seen an increasing number of lenders having to withdraw various deals and mortgages, with many facing severe difficulties when it comes to getting funding on the wholesale markets to finance their mortgage lending operations.

The difficulties in getting affordable finance have resulted in mortgage lenders really having to scale back on the amount of money that they can lend as well as on who they are prepared to lend to. Many have had to take some of their more competitive deals off the markets, and a range of different mortgage types, such as 100% and 125% mortgages, have disappeared from the shelves over recent weeks, leaving consumers with far less choice and a smaller change of being able to get finance.

Last July, which was prior to the spread of the global credit crunch, there were around 15,599 different mortgage deals on offer, but this has now fallen to just 5,725. Sun-prime mortgages and buy to let mortgages have been particularly affected by the this reduction in the different types of mortgages, and first time buyers have also suffered as a result of 100% mortgage loans disappearing and lenders demanding higher deposits.

The number of mortgage approvals has also plummeted recently, with the level of approvals down by around one third in February compared to the same period last year. There are fewer applications from buyers that are worried to take the plunge due to the possibility of plummeting house prices, and tighter lending conditions have also contributed to this drop in application approvals.

Crooked steering wheel or off center - how to fix

There is nothing more annoying than driving a car that has a crooked steering wheel, even if it is only slight it can really grate on your nerves. First of all the good news, more often than not this is not a sign that anything is drastically wrong (especially if it is only slightly off center), and as long as your tires are wearing OK and your car is driving fine you may be able to fix it by yourself. (if you have an airbag you can't do it yourself and will probably kill yourself if you try.)

How to straighten a steering wheel (non airbag).

1./ Remove the cover which may be screwed on or simply able to be flicked off with a screw driver.

2./ Undo the bolt on the spindle that holds the steering wheel on, but don't remove it fully you need to use it as stopper, or else when you yank on the steering wheel and it suddenly comes loose it will probably smack you right on the nose!

3/ Loosen the steering wheel, by pulling sharply on it.

5./ Remove the stopper and pull off the steering wheel first however unclip the horn wires that may be clipped to this part of the steering wheel.

6./ There is normally a plastic ring that controls the indicators, this should also be slightly off center, so center that first and then replace the steering wheel placing it in a centered position.

7./ Tighten securely - you don't want your steering wheel falling off while you are driving!

8./ Test and see if its now ok, if not continue adjusting until it is.

How to straighten a Steering wheel with an Airbag.

If your steering wheel is crooked and you have an airbag, you need to get a wheel alignment done on all 4 wheels of your car and the wheel alignment technician needs to properly center your steering wheel when they do it. If you have just had a wheel alignment and now your steering wheel is off center you need to take it back and ask them to do it again!

Often wheel balance is confused with wheel alignment however the two are really very different issues.

How often should I rotate my tires?
Most vehicle manufacturers recommend that you rotate your tires every 5000 – 10000 miles. One easy way to stay on top of it is to simply ask your workshop to do it every time you service your vehicle.

How should they be rotated?
With modern radial tires they should be kept on the same side of the vehicle that they already are and simply swap the front to the back and vice versa. The old days of diagonally swapping tires is long gone – that was for old style cross ply tires not for modern radials.

Won’t my workshop do it anyway?
A good workshop would pick up on this anyway, however it never hurts to check and make sure.

What will happen if I don’t rotate my tires?
If you own a front wheel drive car in a very short amount of time you are going to chew out your front tires. Front wheel drives wear the front tires 2 to 3 times as fast as the back tires so it is important to keep on top of your rotation cycle. Rear wheel drive cars are not as bad however it still pays to rotate them as it will even out the wear on the tires.

Should I rotate my spare tire?
My advice is to leave it as is, that way for one you can always count on having a spare that is in good condition – also in a lot of cases the spare tire can actually be on a different rim or even a different size altogether. If it is the same size and specifications you can wear out the four tires on your car and then buy 3, saving the best one of what’s left for a spare.

Size
Sizing of tires can get very confusing, make sure you write down ALL the numbers related to the size of the tires on your car as well as the speed rating. EG 225/60 HR15

225 - this is the width of the tire
60 - this is the profile (as a percentage of the width)
H - this is the speed rating of the tire - H = 210 km/h (don't buy a tire with a lower rating than your current tires.)
